Daniel 11 Prophecy

Scripture

Daniel 11:3-4
Then a mighty king will arise, who will rule with great power and do as he pleases. After he has arisen, his empire will be broken up and parcelled out toward the four winds of heaven. It will not go to his descendants, nor will it have the power he exercised, because his empire will be uprooted and given to others.

History

Scripture doesn’t indicate where the “mighty king” will arise, but the previous verse states that Xerxes invades Greece. The Persians were in the ascendency until this mighty king had arisen.

The mighty king is Alexander the Great, who eventually came to reign over the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedon. He conquered the Persians.

After Alexander’s death, his 2 heirs (Alexander IV and Philip III) were murdered, so his kingdom did not go to his descendants, just as the prophecy states.

The prophecy states that his empire will be broken up and parcelled out toward the four winds of heaven. Did this happen? Yes! His kingdom was split 4 ways. A portion of the kingdom to each of his top 4 generals.

The kingdom was divided as follows:

  • Greece (to Cassander)
  • Asia Minor (to Lysimachus)
  • Assyria (to Seleucus)
  • Egypt and Libya (to Ptolemy)
