Daniel 11 Prophecy

Scripture

Daniel 11:18-19
Then he will turn his attention to the coastlands and will take many of them, but a commander will put an end to his insolence and will turn his insolence back on him. After this, he will turn back toward the fortresses of his own country but will stumble and fall, to be seen no more.

History

Antiochus III (KOTN) attacks various islands and also gives asylum to Hannibal of Carthage, who is an enemy of the romans. This angers Rome who attack him and take a lot of his territory. They also take his son hostage.

The “commander who put an end to his insolence” likely refers to Gaius Popillius Laenas. Antiochus III attacked Alexandria and the Romans demanded he stopped. He wouldn’t commit to the demand and tried to play for time, but Gaius is said to have drawn a circle around him in the sand and ordered he did not move out of the circle until he gave his answer.

Antiochus III goes home to Antioch, where he attempts to plunder a pagan temple. This enrages the locals, who kill him.
